Television viewers in the UK have recently had the opportunity to watch the classic Granada TV series A Family at War on nostalgia channel Talking Pictures.
A Family at War was first broadcast between 1970 and 1972, with 52 episodes in all. It followed the lives of the Ashton family in Liverpool, and how they were affected by the Second World War. The programme regularly topped the TV viewing charts in the UK (even beating Coronation Street) and was a hit around the world, including Norway (where it was voted best TV series of all time), India, Pakistan and the Middle East.
During an enormously successful television career, John Finch has written just one novel – Cuddon Return. This has now been reissued by Wyndham Books as A Shaft of Light. The novel contains all of John Finch’s trademark understanding of the lives and hopes of ordinary people during the war.
